Former Arsenal academy goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri has ended any doubts about his international future after declaring that he wants to play for Nigeria instead of England or Uganda, Footynaija reports.
The 23-year-old, who now plays for Danish champions FC Midtjylland, was born in London and was once invited to an England youth training camp in 2020. Because of his family background, he was also eligible to represent Uganda. But after being called up to train with Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad during the 2026 Unity Cup in London, Ejeheri says his focus is now fully on Nigeria.
Speaking to Flashscore, the goalkeeper admitted the invitation caught him by surprise.
“I was definitely happy, but I didn’t have much time to think about it because it was only a couple of hours before we were due to train, so I had to focus on training straight away. But it was a good step.”
Ejeheri started his career at Arsenal’s Hale End academy before gaining senior experience on loan in England and Finland. After leaving the Premier League club, he joined FC Midtjylland in 2024 and spent last season on loan at FC Fredericia, where he made his Danish Superliga debut before returning to Midtjylland.
The former Arsenal prospect believes wearing Nigeria’s green and white jersey would be the greatest moment of his career.
“Representing Nigeria would mean a lot to me. It would definitely be the biggest achievement of my career and something I’m looking forward to the most.
“Of course, there are a lot of good Nigerian goalkeepers, so it’s up to me to perform as well as I can for my club. Playing regularly is the most important thing for me. As long as I’m playing, anything can happen.”
Ejeheri will now hope strong performances in Denmark can earn him another Super Eagles call-up as he battles established goalkeepers Maduka Okoye, Stanley Nwabali and Arthur Okonkwo for a place in Chelle’s plans.
