Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles face a demanding route to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, Footynaija reports.
Éric Chelle’s side needs to overcome three qualifying rounds and finish among Africa’s top three teams at the 2027 U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The expectations are high for Nigeria, who have missed the last two editions of the men’s Olympic football tournament after winning gold at Atlanta 1996, silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016.
The journey begins with a two-legged encounter against the Democratic Republic of Congo in November.
Olympic Eagles must overcome DR Congo
Chelle has invited 31 home-based players to camp in Ijebu-Ode as Nigeria prepare for the second-round qualifying tie.
The first leg is scheduled for November 13 at the TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi, with the return match set for November 17 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
Nigeria must finish ahead of DR Congo on aggregate to advance to the final qualifying round for the 2027 U23 AFCON. Failure to progress would end the Olympic Eagles’ hopes of reaching Los Angeles.
Although Nigeria received a bye in the first round, DR Congo earned their place in this stage after overcoming Mauritania.
Burkina Faso or Zambia could be next
Victory over DR Congo would take Nigeria into the third and final qualifying round, scheduled for March 2027. The Olympics Eagles will face the winner of the clash between Burkina Faso and Zambia.
The winners of that stage’s two-legged ties will secure places at the U23 AFCON in Egypt, where eight teams will compete for the continental title and Olympic qualification.
Nigeria must therefore navigate another difficult opponent after the DR Congo test before they can turn their attention to the final tournament.
Nigeria must finish in the top three in Egypt
Reaching the U23 AFCON would not guarantee Nigeria a place at the Olympics.
Egypt have qualified automatically as hosts, while seven other nations will earn their places through the qualifying rounds. At the tournament, Nigeria must finish in the top three to secure one of Africa’s three automatic places at the Los Angeles 2028 men’s football competition.
That makes every match in Egypt important, with little room for error against the continent’s strongest U23 teams.
Age rules and squad planning
Nigeria must also build a squad that complies with Olympic eligibility rules. The qualifying campaign is designed for under-23 players, so the coaches must assess eligible young talents and build a competitive core.
The Olympic tournament permits a limited number of over-age players, but Nigeria cannot rely on experienced senior internationals alone to navigate the qualification process.
Still, the immediate priority is for Chelle and his technical crew to prepare a balanced squad capable of beating DR Congo. Only after clearing that hurdle can Nigeria take another step towards reviving their Olympic football ambitions.
