Barcelona have taken a major step in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi by submitting an official transfer bid, Footynaija reports.
According to transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano, the German international has made Barcelona his preferred destination this summer.
The 24-year-old, who is valued at around €40 million, is one of Dortmund’s biggest transfer assets. The Bundesliga club have made only a few signings this summer, including Joane Gadou and Kauã Prates, while Justin Lerma is also set to arrive. More transfer activity is expected once players leave, and Adeyemi, who once came close to joining Juventus, could be among the first departures.
Adeyemi’s playing time dropped under coach Niko Kovac during the second half of last season, making him open to a fresh challenge after also missing out on the FIFA World Cup. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has admired the versatile attacker since trying to sign him for Bayern Munich in 2022. Able to play on either wing or as a centre-forward, Adeyemi could strengthen Barcelona’s attack, although concerns remain over his injury record and inconsistent form at Dortmund, where he has scored 36 goals and provided 25 assists in 146 matches.
Adeyemi’s foundation continues to change lives in Nigeria
Away from football, Adeyemi is making a huge difference in Nigeria through the Karim Adeyemi Foundation, fulfilling a promise to his Nigerian father by investing in communities, especially in Ibadan and Lagos.
The foundation has built and equipped the Karim Adeyemi Emergency Paediatric Ward at Adeoyo State Maternity Teaching Hospital in Ibadan, helping thousands of children receive emergency treatment. It has also partnered with the Red Cross to provide first-aid equipment and CPR training for teachers and pupils across Oyo State.
Its water projects include a treatment plant in Odo Osun that provides safe drinking water for more than 20,000 residents, while additional boreholes now serve over 35,000 people across four local government areas. The foundation has also dredged the Temidire River to reduce flooding and built sanitation facilities for the Oje Market community.
In football, Adeyemi funds a residential academy for underprivileged youngsters and, alongside Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, helped build athlete hostels at Maracana Stadium in Ajegunle. The foundation also pays school fees for academy players, supports SS3 students with free STEM learning through eTutors Nigeria, and organises an annual essay competition promoting sport as a tool for community development.
