Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has revealed why the German club has no regrets over their decision to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface despite his injury problems, Footynaija.com reports.
Boniface joined Werder on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen on deadline day in September 2025 after falling behind Patrik Schick in the pecking order at the Bay Arena.
The move was expected to give the Nigerian a fresh start and regular playing time after his own injury struggles had limited his opportunities at Leverkusen.

However, Boniface’s spell at the Weserstadion never really got going. The 25-year-old made just 11 appearances during the 25/26 campaign, starting only two games and failing to score before another serious knee injury brought his season to a premature end.
Boniface eventually underwent surgery in January 2026 and spent several months on the sidelines before returning to Leverkusen at the end of his loan spell.
Despite how the move turned out, Fritz insists Werder Bremen were right to take a chance on the former Union Saint-Gilloise striker.
“Not so much. We still wanted a striker at the time and had very limited financial resources,” Fritz told the German Press Agency.
“Victor was available on short notice. We saw it as an opportunity. The financial risk was manageable.
“Of course, we were aware of the knee issue. But nobody could have foreseen that he would get injured again and need surgery.
“Victor is a sensible lad who didn’t cause any trouble in our locker room. That’s why I can’t say I regret it. We have to be willing to take a certain amount of risk.”
Boniface has now returned to Bayer Leverkusen, where he will be hoping to put his injury problems behind him and rediscover the form that made him one of the Bundesliga’s hottest strikers during Die Werkself’s title-winning season.
