Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has earned a place in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week after scoring in Hull City’s stunning 2-0 win over Manchester United, Footynaija reports.
The Premier League’s record goalscorer named Ajayi in his Matchweek 1 XI on Monday, two days after the Nigeria international helped Hull make a winning return to the top flight.
Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, 22 August. He reacted quickest after United failed to clear a corner and fired Hull ahead.
Nobel Mendy then made it 2-0 in the 38th minute. Hull held on for a clean sheet and secured their first Premier League victory over Manchester United.
Ajayi’s afternoon ended in the 63rd minute when he was replaced by Paddy McNair due to a knock. His goal had already written his name into Hull’s history, as it was the club’s first Premier League goal since returning to the competition.
Shearer selected Ajayi alongside Mendy in defence. Chelsea forward Cole Palmer also made the XI after creating a goal after only 31 seconds and scoring four minutes into the second half in a 3-2 win over Fulham.
The selection gives Ajayi an early personal reward after Hull returned to the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season. The Super Eagles defender has also been nominated for the Player of the Matchweek award.
