The recent departure of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali from Chippa United has continued to generate mixed reactions with the latest coming from former Nigerian shot-stopper Bassey Akpan, Footynaija.com reports.
Recall that Nwabali is now a free agent after cutting ties with the South African Premier Soccer League side earlier this month. He requested a contract terminated and those in charge at Port Elizabeth duly obliged.
The Nigeria international recently expressed his readiness to relaunch his career elsewhere amid reported interest from South Africa, Tunisia and England. As things stand though, he’s yet to receive any official offers.
For Akpan, there’s a huge question mark over the timing of Nwabali’s Chippa United exit. The former goalie has questioned the logic behind walking away from his contract after the transfer window had already shut.
What Bassey Akpan said

“This is not the right time for him to terminate his contract. The transfer window has just closed, so why terminate now?” a bemused Akpan asked during a chat with Brila FM.
“If the decision had been taken before the window opened, he would have had the opportunity to secure another club and continue playing.
“It’s not good for a goalkeeper of his stature to be without a team. For a national team goalkeeper, not playing regularly is a serious concern.
“The next transfer window is the summer window, around May or June, which means he could be without a club for several months.
“Unless the termination is due to injury or the need for rehabilitation, the decision is difficult to understand. At the moment, the exact reasons behind his contract termination remain unclear.”

While Nwabali is currently free to commit his future to any club at any time, his contract termination coming after transfer deadline day for most of the major leagues means his options are very limited if he’s looking to see competitive action before the end of the season.
