Manchester United have made an enquiry about SC Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic as they consider an alternative to Arsenal-linked Victor Osimhen, Footynaija reports.
Football FanCast reports that United have contacted Freiburg about the 23-year-old Croatia international. The report says Matanovic could cost about £30m, a much lower figure than the fee expected for Osimhen.
United are looking for another striker after their attacking options failed to provide enough goals last season. Osimhen is one of the club’s targets, but a deal for the Galatasaray forward would be more expensive and could face competition from other clubs.
Matanovic offers a different option. The 1.94m striker joined Freiburg from Eintracht Frankfurt in July 2025 after scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists in 32 games for Karlsruher SC during the previous season.
He then produced important moments for Freiburg in 2025-26. In March, he scored twice after half-time as Freiburg came from 1-0 down to beat former club St Pauli 2-1 at the Millerntor Stadium.
Freiburg have also confirmed that Matanovic is part of their plans for the 2026-27 season. In a 29 July interview, he spoke about his targets for the new campaign.
United’s enquiry does not mean a transfer is close. It does, however, give manager Michael Carrick another striker option if the club cannot agree a deal for Osimhen before the transfer window closes.
