Celtic have confirmed the signing of Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year contract with the option of a further year, Footynaija.com reports.

The 28-year-old striker, who left Sevilla by mutual consent on Monday, moves to Glasgow as a free agent. He previously spent the latter half of last season on loan at Middlesbrough.

Iheanacho is no stranger to Brendan Rodgers, having played under the Celtic boss during his time at Leicester City. Together, they lifted the FA Cup in 2021, with the forward making more than 200 appearances for the Foxes after joining from Manchester City in 2017.

Rodgers welcomed the reunion. “I know Kelechi so well and what he can bring to the team,” he said. “He is such a talented player, with great ability, athleticism and work-rate. I am sure he will love being at Celtic and I believe our fans will love what he brings. He has great experience and he is right in his peak years so he can be a great signing for us. I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team.”

Iheanacho has won nearly 60 caps for Nigeria and was instrumental in the Super Eagles’ run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final. He now becomes the third Nigerian international to wear Celtic green, following in the footsteps of Efe Ambrose and Ibrahim Rabiu.

The striker’s immediate task will be to sharpen Celtic’s attack as they push to retain the Premiership title.
