Victor Osimhen was briefly caught up in an unexpected tax problem in Turkey after receiving an official legal warning over unpaid income tax, Footynaija reports.
However, it has now been made clear that he was not responsible for making the said payment.
According to reports from Turkish media, the Super Eagles striker was sent a formal notice by a local bank after taxes connected to his salary had not been settled. The warning raised concerns, but the issue was quickly cleared up after Osimhen informed Galatasaray about what had happened.
The Turkish champions acted immediately by paying the outstanding tax, bringing the matter to an end before it could become a bigger legal issue. Under Osimhen’s contract, Galatasaray, not the Super Eagles star, is responsible for handling income tax payments on his behalf.
The incident has again put the club’s finances under the spotlight. In recent months, there have been reports claiming Galatasaray delayed some player payments because of cash-flow problems. However, the club has strongly denied those claims, insisting it has met all of its financial commitments and that the tax delay was simply an administrative mistake.
Osimhen, who reportedly earns €15 million per season and is the highest-paid player at the club, is Galatasaray’s most valuable star. The Nigerian striker is also attracting interest from several top European clubs, including Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.
Despite the transfer rumours, Osimhen appears settled in Istanbul, where he is loved by supporters. The tax issue has now been resolved and is not expected to affect his preparations for the new season after Galatasaray’s 2-0 pre-season defeat to Monza.
