Josh Maja is closing in on a return to French football, with the Super Eagles striker now understood to be nearing an agreement with Ligue 1 side Le Havre after leaving West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season, Footynaija.com reports.
The 27-year-old became a free agent when his contract with West Brom expired in June, bringing an end to a three-year spell with the Championship club. Maja now has the chance to return to a league he already knows well, with Le Havre emerging as his next destination.
The move would give the Nigerian another opportunity to rebuild his career in France. Maja previously played for Bordeaux, where he enjoyed some memorable moments in Ligue 1 and showed the finishing ability that made him such an interesting prospect when he first moved to France.
His time at West Brom also had its good moments. Maja joined the Baggies in 2023 and scored 12 Championship goals in his first season, but injuries later affected his progress. Last season, he made 40 appearances across all competitions and scored five goals, including four in the Championship.
That record does not tell the whole story, though. Maja spent much of the campaign coming off the bench, starting only 15 of West Brom’s 46 Championship matches. His contract then ran out, leaving him free to consider his next move.
Reports indicate that Le Havre are now close to securing his signature, with an official announcement expected once the final details are sorted out.
For Maja, the move could be exactly what he needs. He knows French football already, and a return to Ligue 1 would give him another chance to play regularly at a good level.
