Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic believes Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye can develop into one of Serie A’s finest shot-stoppers after praising the Nigerian’s performances during the closing stages of last season, Footynaija.com reports.
Okoye cemented his place as Udinese’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 25/26 campaign, making 30 Serie A appearances, keeping 10 clean sheets and producing a number of crucial saves as the Zebrette secured another season in the Italian top flight.
Although a thigh knock sustained while on international duty with Nigeria briefly interrupted his campaign in March, the 26-year-old returned immediately after the international break and remained available for the rest of the season.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Runjaic admitted the goalkeeper had endured a difficult spell but insisted he has all the qualities needed to establish himself among Italy’s elite.
“Unfortunately, he got injured, but we saw what he gave at the end of last season. We are confident that he can continue and that he can become one of the strongest goalkeepers in Serie A. Now he needs to get back to fitness.”
Runjaic’s remarks reflect the confidence Okoye inspired with his displays after returning from his brief setback. The Nigerian finished the campaign in impressive form, helping Udinese record 10 clean sheets while posting a save percentage of 68.4% across his 30 league outings.
Now fully fit and actively involved in Udinese’s preparations for the new season, Okoye is expected to retain his place as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
With Runjaic publicly expressing his belief in the former Sparta Rotterdam and Watford shot-stopper, the Super Eagles star will be aiming to justify his manager’s confidence by making a strong start in Serie A this season.
