Kelechi Iheanacho could remain a Celtic player as the Scottish champions are close to reaching an agreement on a new contract with the Super Eagles striker before the start of the 2026/27 season, Footynaija reports.
According to Football Insider, recent talks between Celtic and Iheanacho have gone well, leaving both sides confident that a new deal will be completed soon.
The Nigerian joined Celtic last September after ending his time at Spanish club Sevilla, where he struggled to make an impact. He signed an initial one-year contract that included the option of another season, but the club decided not to trigger that clause when it expired.
Even so, Celtic never stopped working to keep the experienced forward. Iheanacho impressed whenever he was available, despite missing some matches through injury. He scored important goals during the campaign, including a late winning penalty against Motherwell in a thrilling 3-2 victory. He also played an important part in the win over Hearts that secured the Scottish Premiership title as Celtic completed another domestic double.
His performances convinced the club that he still has plenty to offer. Celtic believe his experience, ability to play in different attacking positions and calmness in big matches make him an important member of the squad.
With pre-season preparations already underway, the Scottish champions want to finalise the deal as quickly as possible. Reaching an agreement would also help the club avoid losing the Nigerian international to other European teams that have been keeping an eye on his situation.
If the negotiations are completed as expected, Iheanacho will continue his career in Glasgow and look to help Celtic defend their league title and compete strongly in Europe next season.
