Nigeria open their 2026 Unity Cup campaign on Tuesday night against Zimbabwe at The Valley in south-east London, and for all the familiarity between these two sides, nobody in the Super Eagles camp is treating this as a walkover, Footynaija.com reports.
The tournament carries real weight this year. FIFA has granted the Unity Cup full Tier 1 international status, meaning every minute of every game counts toward official rankings and caps. That adds to what was once considered a casual invitational competition.
Nigeria won the 2025 edition at Brentford and arrive as defending champions, though the squad Eric Chelle has assembled looks very different from previous iterations.

The two biggest names absent from Chelle’s squad are Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, both of whom are being held back for the Poland and Portugal friendlies in early June. In their place, Chelle has handed first senior call-ups to 12 players, turning the tournament into something of an extended trial.
Nigeria and Zimbabwe know each other reasonably well. The two sides met home and away during the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, drawing 1-1 on both occasions, first in Kigali and then at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Zimbabwe have never beaten Nigeria in a competitive fixture, but their draws in qualifying show they are capable of making life difficult.
Tembo in no mood to sightsee
Warriors head coach Kaitano Tembo has been clear about what his side came to London to do.
“Zimbabwe are coming to win against the Super Eagles,” he told ZIFA’s official channels after their opening training session, adding that the mood in camp was positive despite some players still arriving from their clubs.
Zimbabwe’s squad includes players from across Europe and Africa, with Brentford’s Marley Tavaziva, Ipswich Town’s Corbin Mthunzi and Hibernian’s Munashe Garananga among the experienced names in their travelling party. These are not coming to make up the numbers.
For Chelle, the game is about more than a result. He wants to see new players handle the pressure of a senior international occasion, find out who rises and who shrinks, and begin building the combinations he will need when AFCON qualifying starts in September.
Kick-off at The Valley is on Tuesday, May 26.
