Nigeria’s Flamingos produced a devastating attacking performance to thrash Guinea 5-0 in the first leg of their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifying tie on Saturday night in Abidjan, Footynaija reports.
The result moves Nigeria within touching distance of the final qualification round for Morocco 2026.
Played at the Stade Champroux in Ivory Coast, where Guinea hosted the encounter, the match quickly turned into a one-sided affair as the Nigerian youngsters overwhelmed their opponents with pace, movement and relentless pressure from the opening whistle.
The breakthrough arrived almost immediately. Barely a minute had passed when captain Harmony Chidi latched onto a dangerous move and calmly finished to stun Guinea and hand Nigeria a dream start. The early goal completely shifted the momentum in favour of the Flamingos, who continued to attack with confidence and intensity.
Guinea struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pressing game and fluid attacking combinations. Chidi doubled the advantage in the 12th minute after another sweeping move carved open the defence. The forward’s movement inside the box repeatedly caused panic among the Guinean defenders, who found it difficult to deal with Nigeria’s speed in transition.
The Flamingos kept complete control of possession and were rewarded again eight minutes before half-time when Kemi Adegbuyi added a third goal with a composed finish after sustained pressure around the area. Two minutes later, Chidi completed a superb first-half hat-trick, capitalising on another defensive lapse to send Nigeria into the interval with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Coach Akeem Busari’s side maintained the same discipline and energy after the restart, refusing to allow Guinea any route back into the contest. Nigeria controlled the midfield, protected their backline comfortably and continued to create openings whenever they surged forward.
A fifth goal in the second half completed a dominant evening for the Flamingos, who now carry a huge advantage into the return leg in Nigeria later this month. The emphatic away victory leaves the West Africans firmly on course for the final qualifying round, where a place at the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco will move within reach.
