Nigeria’s Flamingos have qualified for their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final after beating Brazil 3-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco, Footynaija reports.
The Flamingos scored three times in the second half to knock out Brazil at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé on November 4.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute, putting Nigeria in front after a goalless first half.
Awawu Bashiru doubled the lead in the 71st minute before scoring again shortly afterwards to complete her brace and put the result beyond doubt.
Brazil struggled to break down Nigeria’s defence and could only find a consolation goal late in the encounter but the Flamingos held on for a convincing win.
The victory takes Nigeria into their first final in the competition, surpassing their previous best finish of third place in 2022. They will now have a chance to win the title for the first time.
The Flamingos will face Japan in Sunday’s final after the Asian side defeated North Korea in the other semi-final on Wednesday.
Japan won 4-1 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in normal time. They needed a 95th-minute equaliser to take the game into a shootout before securing their place in the final.
Nigeria will meet Japan on Sunday, November 8, with the Flamingos aiming to cap their historic campaign by winning the U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
