Calvin Bassey has described his new captaincy role at Fulham as an “unbelievable” privilege after new head coach Alvaro Arbeloa entrusted the Super Eagles defender with the armband, Footynaija.com reports.
The Nigerian centre-back has captained Fulham in each of their first three Premier League games this season, with Arbeloa trusting him to lead the side despite his relatively young age.
Bassey, who is entering his fourth season with the club, believes the responsibility has come naturally given his experience and position on the pitch.

“It’s a privilege,” Bassey explained. “Being able to captain this club is unbelievable.
“Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone, so I just be myself and try to help everyone. Leading comes naturally because of the position I play, being able to see everything and having to communicate as a centre-half.”
The 26-year-old also insisted that taking on the captaincy has not changed his approach inside the dressing room, with his focus remaining on supporting his teammates rather than trying to become a different type of leader.
“I’ve been around these boys for so long and been fortunate enough to have played so many games, so it didn’t really change anything,” he added.
“Of course, it’s a huge privilege, and thank you to the manager for giving it to me, but I don’t think it’s changed me.”
Arbeloa had already identified Bassey as a strong leader during pre-season, with the Spaniard impressed by the defender’s work ethic and his ability to operate in the high defensive line he wants to implement at Fulham.
The new responsibility comes at a difficult start to the campaign, however, with Fulham still searching for their first Premier League points after three matches.
There have nevertheless been positive signs for Arbeloa’s side, and Bassey will now have another opportunity to lead the team when Fulham travel to Anfield to face Liverpool this weekend.
