Nigeria coach Eric Chelle faces a potential setback ahead of the Super Eagles’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Tanzania, Footynaija reports.
Chelle’s worries concern Samuel Chukwueze, who is expected to miss the fixtures because of a hip injury.
The AC Milan winger developed discomfort in his hip after his club’s 3-2 victory over Atalanta, prompting him to seek specialist medical advice.
The 27-year-old has since started a targeted course of infiltrative treatment aimed at addressing the problem without surgery.
Chukwueze is expected to spend a few weeks on the sidelines, with his condition due to be reassessed in 15 days. Italian media reports, including Tuttosport, suggest he is unlikely to return before the international break.
Chukwueze faces race against time
The Nigerian could miss five upcoming matches for AC Milan against Udinese, Bologna, Inter Milan, Ferencváros and Genoa before the international break.
His absence would leave Chelle considering alternatives as Nigeria prepare for their back-to-back qualifiers against Tanzania.
Chukwueze featured in Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against Madagascar, playing for around an hour before making way for Moses Usor. He was an unused substitute in the match against Guinea-Bissau.
The winger’s potential absence would deprive Chelle of an experienced attacking option, particularly his ability to take on defenders and create chances from wide areas.
Nigeria currently trail Guinea-Bissau by three points with wins needed against Tanzania to turn the tide in their favour.
