Michael Kayode says he never doubted his decision to represent Italy after confirming Nigeria approached him before his first senior call-up to the Azzurri, Footynaija reports.
The Brentford right-back was named in Italy’s squad for upcoming matches against Belgium, Turkey and France, completing a journey that began with the Italian youth teams.
Kayode, who was born in Borgomanero to Nigerian parents, has been a regular for Brentford since joining from Fiorentina. His performances earned him a place in the senior Italy squad, but the 22-year-old revealed Nigeria had also tried to persuade him to change international allegiance.
“That’s true. But I came through the Italian youth ranks, and I’ve always considered it an honour to be part of this national team. And now, here I am,” Kayode told reporters.
The defender said his senior call-up came at the end of an unforgettable day after Brentford defeated Chelsea.
“It’s a great emotion to wear the Azzurri shirt. I found out about the call-up immediately after the win against Chelsea, in which I also scored.
“It was a perfect day, which repays me for all my hard work. Anyway, I never had any doubts about my choice.”
Kayode’s international path has been closely linked to Italy since he was a teenager, making Nigeria’s approach an important moment in his decision over which country to represent at senior level.
His call-up also gives Italy another option at right-back as the Azzurri prepare for their next international fixtures.
Italy are rebuilding after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Kayode now hoping to turn his first senior invitation into a debut.
