Former Super Eagles midfielder Garba Lawal has warned Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman to raise their game after both Nigerians missed out on the 2026 African Player of the Year shortlist, Footynaija reports.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled its 10-man shortlist on Wednesday, November 4, with no Nigerian player making the cut.
The snub comes two years after Nigeria enjoyed back-to-back wins in the award. Osimhen claimed the prize in 2023 after his outstanding season with Napoli, while Lookman won it in 2024 following his impressive performances for Atalanta.
Their absence from this year’s list has disappointed Lawal, who believes injuries, poor form and fitness problems may have contributed to their omission.
Speaking to Africafoot, the former Super Eagles midfielder said: “It is regrettable that no Nigerian is on the list. But we know that several factors can explain such a situation: a dip in form, an injury, or simply a lack of fitness.”
World Cup failure hurts Osimhen and Lookman’s chances
Lawal also pointed to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as another reason neither player made the shortlist.
He believes playing at the tournament could have boosted their chances of earning another individual honour.
“The absence from the World Cup is also an important factor, as it is the biggest tournament in the world and if you do not participate as a player, it is difficult to aspire to such an award,” he explained.
Lawal reckons Osimhen and Lookman could have been among the nominees if the Super Eagles had qualified for the tournament.
He has urged both forwards to make the most of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and put themselves back in contention for the award.
“Osimhen won it three years ago and Lookman two years ago. Time flies, and they’re not getting any younger. The race for another title is on with the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. I hope they make the most of it and put in a great performance,” he added.
Morocco and PSG defender Achraf Hakimi is favourite to claim the 2026CAF Footballer of the Year award, after also winning it last year.
