Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Calvin Bassey would be an excellent addition to the Red Devils’ defence, backing the reported interest in the Super Eagles defender ahead of the January transfer window, Footynaija.com reports.
The Fulham centre-back has emerged as a potential target for Manchester United following his impressive performances in the Premier League, with the Old Trafford outfit reportedly assessing options to strengthen their defensive department.
Brown, who has followed Bassey’s progress since his time at Rangers, revealed that the Nigerian has always impressed him with his physical attributes and ability to contribute in different defensive positions.

“Calvin Bassey is a player I’ve admired for a long time, even back when he played for Rangers,” Brown told Football Insider.
“I thought he was excellent there, so physically dominant, but also comfortable on the ball, could play at left-back as well, and he’s improved since he joined Fulham.”
The former United scout also highlighted Bassey’s development at Craven Cottage, pointing to his experience in English football and importance to Fulham as reasons why he would suit the Premier League giants.
He believes the 26-year-old fits the profile of defender United are looking to recruit, particularly with the left side of their defence identified as an area requiring improvement.

“They want a left-sided defender because it’s an area where they are really weak, and Bassey is somebody who would be an upgrade on the players they’ve already got,” Brown added.
However, convincing Fulham to part ways with one of their most important players could prove difficult, especially with the Nigerian continuing to play a prominent role in their defensive setup.
Brown nevertheless believes the prospect of joining a club of United’s stature could appeal to the former Rangers defender if the Red Devils decide to formalise their interest.
Bassey’s future could therefore become an interesting talking point as the January transfer window approaches, with Manchester United potentially facing competition from other clubs monitoring the Nigerian’s situation.
