The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached the stage every football fan waits for. After weeks of shocks, extra-time drama and unforgettable moments, only four teams remain.
France, Spain, England and Argentina have survived the tournament’s twists and turns to reach the semi-finals. Remarkably, they are all former world champions, occupy the top four places in the FIFA World Rankings and were widely regarded as the favourites before the tournament began.
It is the first FIFA World Cup since 1990 that all four semi-finalists have previously lifted the trophy, setting the stage for one of the strongest final-four line-ups in modern World Cup history. Both semi-final matches will be live on SuperSport via DStv and GOtv.
France, Spain Renew Modern Rivalry
The first semi-final on Tuesday, 14 July at 8:00 pm reunites two European heavyweights who have become familiar foes in recent years. Spain edged France 2-1 in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-finals before winning another thriller, 5-4, in the 2025 UEFA Nations League semi-finals. Now they meet again with a place in the World Cup final on the line.
France arrive after eliminating Morocco, while Spain edged Belgium thanks to another decisive goal from substitute Mikel Merino. Kylian Mbappé has led France with eight goals, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal remains Spain’s creative spark in a side that continues to find heroes all over the pitch.
The match will be live on SS World Cup Central (DStv Ch. 202, GOtv Ch. 61), with Pidgin commentary available on SS WC Naija (DStv Ch. 204, GOtv Ch. 62).
England, Argentina Meet Again
The second semi-final follows on Wednesday, 15 July at 8:00 pm, as England and defending champions Argentina meet in a World Cup for the first time since 2002.
While both teams needed extra time in the quarter-finals to book their places, this fixture carries far more history than recent form. From the 1982 Falklands War to Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal at the 1986 World Cup, England and Argentina have produced some of football’s most memorable encounters. Another chapter now awaits.
The Golden Boot race also adds another layer of intrigue. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé lead with eight goals each, while England’s Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have six. France’s Ousmane Dembélé is also firmly in the conversation with five goals and two assists.
The Dream Semi-finals.
After weeks of surprises that saw Germany, Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands eliminated, the tournament has finally delivered the semi-final line-up many expected before it began. Now, only two matches stand between four of football’s biggest nations and another shot at World Cup glory. Fixtures at glance:
- France vs Spain – Tuesday, 14 July, 8:00 PM
- England vs Argentina – Wednesday, 15 July, 8:00 PM
