Semi Ajayi produced another strong defensive display as Hull City beat fellow newcomers Coventry City 1-0 at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Footynaija reports.
The Nigeria defender played the full match at the heart of Hull’s five-man defence and helped his side keep a second straight clean sheet in the Premier League.
His biggest test was a familiar one. Ajayi faced Nigeria team-mate Taiwo Awoniyi, who started up front for Coventry after scoring and assisting in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week.
Awoniyi struggled to make a big impact as Hull’s defence stayed organised. Coventry had more of the ball and created several chances, but they could not find a way past Konstantinos Tzolakis.
Hull had only 33% possession in the first half but kept Coventry from turning their control into a goal. The hosts finished the half with seven shots, while Hull had one.
The game looked set to end without a goal until Liam Millar struck in the 81st minute. The substitute’s late goal gave Hull their second league win of the season.
It was another impressive performance for Ajayi after his excellent display against Manchester United on the opening weekend. The 32-year-old scored in Hull’s 2-0 win over United and helped the newly promoted side keep a clean sheet. His goal came in the 17th minute before Nobel Mendy added a second.
Ajayi has now helped Hull start their return to the Premier League with two wins and two clean sheets. With another strong display against a Nigerian striker, the defender is quickly making a case as one of the early standout defenders in the Premier League.
