The decision by Super Eagles striker Akor Adams to leave Sevilla for newly promoted Serie A side Venezia has divided opinion among many, with some questioning why the forward chose the move despite interest from ‘bigger’ clubs, Footynaija.com reports.
However, Nigerian photojournalist Pooja believes the transfer makes more sense when the full picture is considered.
Reacting to the deal, Pooja argued that Sevilla’s financial situation played a major role in the decision, insisting the move was driven by business rather than emotion.
“Akor Adams & Sevilla’s case is a delicate one because if you read well, you will understand that Sevilla are in a financial mess and almost got relegated last season,” he wrote.
“They put a price tag on one of their best players and only Venezia showed up with a good fee plus a good project for the player.
“Transfers are more complex than your emotional tweets.
“Sevilla saw a good fee plus a good payment plan for their books but Saheed from Sango Ota is not happy.”
The comments come after Adams completed his move to Venezia in a deal worth just over €16 million, with add-ons capable of taking the total value close to €23 million. The transfer also gives Sevilla a sizeable profit on a player they signed from Montpellier for around €5 million in January 2025.
For many, the move looked like a step backwards. Adams leaves one of Spain’s biggest clubs for a Venezia side that has just returned to Serie A, leading some fans to question why the Nigeria international did not wait for a move to a more established club.
But reports from Spain suggest the situation was far more complicated.
Sevilla have been under pressure to raise funds after another difficult season on and off the pitch. The club needed player sales to improve its finances and create room to register new signings, making Adams one of their most valuable assets despite finishing as their leading scorer in La Liga last season.
Venezia, meanwhile, made Adams a priority. The Italian club agreed personal terms with the striker, continued negotiations with Sevilla for weeks and eventually presented a package thata reportedly satisfied both the club’s financial demands and the player’s career ambitions. The newly promoted side is also backed by ambitious new owners who are investing heavily as they prepare for life back in Serie A.
