Spanish-born striker Kevin Carlos has decided against joining Preston North End, choosing instead to continue chasing his dream of succeeding in one of Europe’s biggest leagues, Footynaija reports.
The 25-year-old, who is eligible to represent Nigeria through his father, was approached by Championship side Preston as manager Paul Heckingbottom searched for another striker ahead of the 2026-27 season. However, French outlet L’Équipe reports that Carlos and his representatives turned down the offer.
It is not the first club he has rejected this summer. Turkish side Samsunspor also failed to convince the forward, who is determined to remain at the highest level despite a disappointing first campaign with French club OGC Nice.
Nice are reportedly open to selling Carlos after signing him from Swiss giants FC Basel for around €6 million in 2025. The French club want to reduce their wage bill and raise money for new arrivals.
Carlos struggled to make an impact in Ligue 1, finishing the season without a league goal in 23 appearances. His only two goals came in the UEFA Europa League, although he featured 35 times in all competitions.
The difficult year came after an impressive spell in Switzerland. Carlos scored 12 league goals for Yverdon-Sport before joining Basel, where he netted 14 goals in 39 matches and helped the club win the Swiss Super League title.
Born in Ceuta, Spain, to a Spanish mother and Nigerian father, Carlos can still choose between Spain and Nigeria at international level. He is yet to play for either country, but reports suggest he is leaning towards representing the Super Eagles. If he rediscovers his scoring form in one of Europe’s top five leagues, the striker could strengthen his case for a first call-up under Nigeria coach Eric Chelle.
