Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has received another major boost ahead of Nigeria’s Unity Cup semifinal against Zimbabwe after the arrivals of midfielder Alhassan Yusuf and defender Igoh Ogbu in the team’s London camp, Footynaija reports.
Their arrival increased the number of players in camp to 19 as preparations gathered pace for Tuesday’s clash at the Charlton Athletic Stadium. Yusuf is expected to add drive and intensity in midfield, while Ogbu strengthens the defensive unit with his calmness and aerial presence.
Nigeria opened camp activities on Saturday evening with 14 players taking part in the first training session. Those present included Junior Ayobami, Al Ameen Tijani, Michael Alata, Adeoye Aderemi, Oputa Chibueze, Igboke Obinna, Elias Ocholi, Tosin Oyedokun, Philip Otele, Arthur Okonkwo, Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Tochukwu Nnadi and Terem Moffi.
The squad later expanded after Francis Uzoho, Chibuike Nwaiwu and Rafiu Durosinmi linked up with the team, before Yusuf and Ogbu became the latest arrivals.
Chelle and his technical crew are expected to continue tactical drills and fitness work as they prepare the side for the meeting with Zimbabwe, a fixture that will also offer the coach another opportunity to assess his squad ahead of future international assignments.
The Super Eagles will hold their pre-match press conference at 11am on Monday, with Chelle and goalkeeper Francis Uzoho scheduled to speak to the media before the team’s official training session later in the day at 4pm.
Several senior stars are still expected in camp, including Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, Raphael Onyedika, Bruno Onyemaechi, Yira Sor, Emmanuel Fernandez, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro and Akor Adams.
Nigeria, defending champions of the Unity Cup, will begin their title defence against Zimbabwe on May 26 in London as Chelle continues shaping his squad for the challenges ahead.
