Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo has opted against linking up with Nigeria for the Super Eagles’ upcoming international fixtures, Footynaija understands.

The former England youth international has chosen instead to keep his focus on club football for now.

Nigeria are preparing for a busy June schedule, which includes participation in the Unity Cup as well as high-profile friendlies against Poland on June 3 and Portugal on June 10. Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Adarabioyo was ready to commit to the Super Eagles for these matches, raising expectations among supporters eager to see the centre-back strengthen Nigeria’s defensive options.

However, sources close to the situation indicate that the former Manchester City academy graduate has made no such commitment. Instead, the 28-year-old is said to be prioritising his development and consistency at Chelsea, where he is keen to establish himself as a regular starter.

Crucially, there has been no formal approach or ongoing discussion between Adarabioyo and the Nigeria Football Federation regarding a potential switch of international allegiance. While former Nigeria head coach José Peseiro had previously made informal enquiries about the defender’s availability, those talks did not progress into any firm agreement.

Adarabioyo’s international situation remains open. Having represented England at youth levels from under-16 through to under-19, he is still eligible to play for Nigeria under FIFA rules. Those appearances came in non-competitive fixtures, meaning he would not require formal clearance to switch should he decide to represent the three-time African champions in the future.

Adarabioyo has made only 16 Premier League appearances this season, a slight dip from the 22 matches he featured in last term.
