Denmark-born forward William Osula came off the bench to score a stunning 90th-minute winner for Newcastle United against Manchester United on Wednesday night, ending Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run as interim manager with a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park, Footynaija.com reports.

Osula, 22, is eligible to represent Nigeria through his father, and the NFF have been tracking him for some time. Born in Aalborg, he came through the academies of Odense and Sheffield United before joining Newcastle in 2023, where he has developed into a reliable option from the bench for Eddie Howe.

He has four goals in all competitions this season.

The United game had plenty of drama before his moment arrived. Newcastle had Jacob Ramsey sent off in first-half stoppage time for a second yellow card, controversially shown for simulation after he went down under the challenge of goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Referee Peter Bankes showed no hesitation, though replays suggested contact had been made. Anthony Gordon had already put Newcastle ahead from the penalty spot after the red card was shown, and Casemiro equalised for United in a dramatic first-half added time to make it 1-1 at the break.

The visitors dominated for long stretches of the second half with the extra man, and Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee were both denied by an outstanding Aaron Ramsdale, who was making his first start in six weeks after returning from injury.

When it seemed as though a draw was the most likely outcome, Osula cut inside from the right, shifted onto his left foot and curled a shot into the far corner that gave Lammens no chance.

It was Carrick’s first loss in eight games since taking charge following Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January, a run that had taken United from eighth to third in the Premier League.
