Nigeria begin their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign today knowing anything less than a convincing start against Tanzania would raise eyebrows.
On paper, this is a mismatch. The Super Eagles are three-time African champions, ranked 38th in the world, and sit a full 74 places above the Taifa Stars. But AFCON has a long history of punishing complacency.
That is why Eric Chelle’s preparation matters.
The Nigerian head coach has enjoyed a rare luxury: seven uninterrupted days on the training pitch with his full squad, the longest spell he has had since taking charge. It has given him time to drill structure, patterns and, crucially, attacking combinations.
Chelle’s natural instinct is to be bold. Against a Tanzania side expected to defend deep and crowd the centre, a front-foot 4-4-2 makes sense. Stanley Nwabali should continue in goal, shielded by a largely settled back four of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Zaidu Sanusi; a blend of athleticism and physical presence.
Midfield is where the intrigue lies. Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi are near certainties, offering ball-winning and tempo control.
The remaining wide roles provide Chelle with options: Samuel Chukwueze’s directness, Ademola Lookman’s intelligence between the lines, Moses Simon’s pace, or the youthful energy of Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, trialled centrally in the friendly against Egypt.
Up front, Victor Osimhen leads the line, that much is non-negotiable. Partnering him with Akor Adams could be the key to unsettling a low block, dragging defenders around and creating space. Cyriel Dessers and Paul Onuachu wait as impact options if the game demands a different rhythm.
There is, of course, the familiar tournament fallback: a 4-2-3-1. That would allow Frank Onyeka or Raphael Onyedika to sit alongside Ndidi, freeing Iwobi to create. But it risks isolating Osimhen against a packed defence.
Against stubborn opposition, two strikers feel like Chelle’s best opening statement.
Predicted Nigeria XI:
Nwabali; Osayi-Samuel, Ajayi, Bassey, Sanusi; Ndidi, Iwobi, Chukwueze, Lookman; Adams, Osimhen.
