Nigeria will face Egypt in a high-profile friendly at Cairo International Stadium on 14 December, the Egyptian Football Association has confirmed, Footynaija.com reports.
The match, reportedly arranged at the request of Egypt coach Hossam Hassan, forms part of both nations’ preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The game promises to be a spectacle, headlined by two of Africa’s biggest stars — Victor Osimhen and Mohamed Salah. Both players, Africa’s Footballers of the Year in 2023 and 2018 respectively, are desperate to win their first AFCON title.
Salah, 33, has scored in four consecutive AFCON tournaments but has twice fallen short in the final, while Osimhen helped Nigeria to a bronze medal in 2019 and a runner-up finish in 2023.
Before meeting Egypt, Nigeria will contest a World Cup qualifying playoff in November against Gabon, and potentially Cameroon or DR Congo. Egypt, who have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, will feature in the UAE International Tournament in November, facing Uzbekistan before a possible final against Cape Verde or Iran.
The Pharaohs, seven-time African champions, are drawn in Group B for AFCON 2025 with South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.
Nigeria are in Group C alongside Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda.
It will be the 20th meeting between both sides — Nigeria lead with nine wins to Egypt’s five.
