A Norwegian court has sentenced Molde midfielder Daniel Daga to six months in prison after finding the Nigeria Under-20 international guilty of committing a sexual act without consent, Footynaija reports.

According to Norwegian broadcaster TV 2, the judgement was delivered on Tuesday by the Nordmøre og Romsdal District Court. Alongside the custodial sentence, the 19-year-old has also been ordered to pay legal costs of NOK 10,000, which is roughly equivalent to N1.45 million.

Daga’s legal representative, Astrid Bolstad, said the player will challenge the decision, insisting he disputes the ruling and maintains that the encounter was consensual.

“He is terribly sorry that the verdict was the way it was. He believes he is innocent and that everything happened with consent,” Bolstad told TV 2.

“He will appeal the verdict. The verdict is not final. He will be treated like everyone else until he is sentenced.”

Molde later confirmed they are aware of the ruling and have taken immediate steps regarding the player’s involvement with the team.

“This is a very demanding matter for all involved. As an employer, Molde Football Club has a responsibility to look after our employees in a responsible manner, while at the same time having great respect for the seriousness of the matter and for the burdens this entails for all parties concerned.

“Based on the situation and the ongoing legal process, the club has decided that the player will not be part of the match squad until further notice.”

Daga joined the Norwegian side in January 2025 and has since played 17 matches, scoring three goals. Before moving to Europe, he gained international recognition with Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, representing the country at the 2023 and 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cups.
