Remo Stars’ CAF Champions League dream ended on a sour note after the Sky Blue Stars were swept aside 7-1 on aggregate by South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Footynaija.com reports.

The second leg in Pretoria finished 2-0, sealing a painful exit that has left many calling for a change in the dugout.

It was another tough evening for Daniel Ogunmodede and his boys, who went into the return leg already chasing a 5-1 deficit from the first match in Abeokuta.

Goals from Portuguese midfielder Nuno Santos and Namibian striker Peter Shalulile on Sunday afternoon completed the damage, as Sundowns controlled the game from start to finish.

Back home, emotions ran high. Supporters flooded social media, some heartbroken, others frustrated, after what many felt was an avoidable collapse.

One fan wrote on X, “I know this sounds harsh, but I believe it’s time @RemoStarsSC parted ways with Coach Daniel Ogunmodede. It will be good for both parties. Coach Dan can seek new challenges abroad, while Remo can hire a foreign coach and rebuild. The team has plateaued.”

That sentiment sums up the mood in Ikenne right now. Ogunmodede, fondly called Ijaball by supporters, has been part of Remo Stars’ rise from the lower leagues to the NPFL elite.

Under his guidance, the club reached continental football in back-to-back seasons and even pushed the boundaries of tactical innovation in the league. But this latest result feels like a reality check.

Domestically, things haven’t looked bright either. On the NPFL table, Remo Stars sit 17th with ten points from seven matches. They’ve managed three wins, a draw, and three losses so far, including defeats to Katsina United and Plateau United.
