A Super Eagles Great

Peter Rufai was born on 24 August 1963 in Lagos and would go on to become one of the most recognisable faces in the history of Nigerian football. He earned 65 senior international caps for the Super Eagles between 1983 and 1998, playing in multiple tournaments and standing out for his commanding presence and consistent performances.

Rufai was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the country’s golden generation. His most celebrated moment came in 1994 when he led Nigeria to its second-ever Africa Cup of Nations title. He played every game in that tournament in Tunisia, where the Super Eagles defeated Zambia 2–1 in the final.

That same year, he also featured prominently at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. That was Nigeria’s first appearance on the global stage. He helped the team finish top of their group and reach the Round of 16, where they lost to Italy. He was also part of the squad for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, though he featured just once in the tournament.

His International Goal

Very few goalkeepers have the rare honour of scoring a goal for their national team, and Peter Rufai is one of them. On 24 July 1993, in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia, Rufai stepped up to take a penalty in Lagos and converted it confidently. Nigeria won that game 6–0, and the goal remains one of the standout moments of his international career.

From Lagos to La Liga

Rufai’s club career was just as remarkable as his national team journey. He started professionally with Stationery Stores in Nigeria before moving to Dragons de l’Ouémé in Benin Republic. These early years gave him continental experience before he made the jump to Europe.

In Belgium, he played for KSC Lokeren and then KSK Beveren. After his time in Belgium, he moved to the Netherlands to join Go Ahead Eagles, where he became a fan favourite. He later moved to Portugal and featured for SC Farense, helping the team secure UEFA Cup qualification. He continued in Portugal with Gil Vicente before attracting interest from Spain.

In 1994, Rufai made history by becoming the first Nigerian goalkeeper to play in La Liga when he joined Hércules CF. His presence in Spain was at a time when African goalkeepers were rarely seen in top European leagues. He later joined Deportivo La Coruña, where he served as a backup goalkeeper.

After his spell in Spain, Rufai returned to Portugal where he wound down his playing career before retiring from professional football.

Playing Style and Legacy

Peter Rufai was a leader on the pitch. He earned the nickname “Dodo Mayana” for his flamboyance and unique charisma. His style was built on solid reflexes, good positioning, and calmness under pressure.

He was one of the earliest Nigerian footballers to pave the way for others in Europe, especially in positions like goalkeeping that were often overlooked when African players were scouted. Many younger Nigerian goalkeepers, including Vincent Enyeama, have credited Rufai for inspiring them to believe in their ability to play abroad.

Royal Roots and Life After Football

Born into a royal family in Idimu, Lagos, Rufai was the son of a traditional ruler. After the death of his father in 1998, he was reportedly invited to ascend the throne. However, he declined the offer, choosing instead to focus on football and his post-retirement life.

Following his retirement from professional football, Rufai stayed close to the game. He set up a goalkeeping academy in Nigeria to train young talents and remained active in football development initiatives.

His Final Days

Peter Rufai had reportedly been managing a prolonged illness in the months leading up to his death. His passing on July 3, 2025, came as a shock to many who admired him, both on and off the pitch. Following the news, tributes began to flood social media and news platforms.

Rufai’s name will forever be remembered among the greatest goalkeepers not only in Nigeria’s history but across the African continent. From his AFCON glory to his groundbreaking journey through European football, Peter Rufai remains a symbol of excellence and pride for Nigerian football.
