Over the years, Ligue 1 has welcomed several Nigerian footballers who left a lasting impression across clubs in France. From flashy forwards to solid goalkeepers, Nigerian talents have consistently turned heads in the French top flight.

In this article, FootyNaija.com ranks the top 5 Nigerians who’ve left their mark in France’s top division—based on performance, legacy, and influence.

5. Moses Simon

Moses Simon brought flair, speed, and sharp decision-making to Ligue 1 after joining Nantes from Levante in 2019. In his first season, he scored 9 goals and provided 8 assists in all competitions, earning Nantes’ Player of the Season award. He played 30 games that season, immediately standing out as a fan favourite.

Over five full seasons at Nantes, Simon delivered consistent performances, often finishing among the top three players in dribbles and chances created for the club. He also clocked 177 appearances before sealing a move to Paris FC in 2025.

4. Jay-Jay Okocha

Jay-Jay Okocha dazzled Ligue 1 with his creative magic during his time at Paris Saint-Germain. The Nigerian attacking midfielder arrived in 1998 and lit up the league with dazzling footwork and bold confidence.

He registered 20 goals and 9 assists in 84 Ligue 1 matches, becoming one of the league’s top entertainers at the turn of the millennium.

PSG fans loved him for his flair and unpredictability, while Ligue 1 defenders feared his ability to make space out of nothing. Though he did not win the league title, he left a legacy of elegance and crowd-pleasing football that remains iconic today.

3. Vincent Enyeama

One of Nigeria’s greatest-ever goalkeepers, Vincent Enyeama dominated the French goalkeeping scene with Lille for several seasons. After joining in 2011, he became the undisputed number one by 2013 and recorded 21 clean sheets in the 2013–14 Ligue 1 campaign.

That season, he came close to breaking Gaetan Huard’s long-standing record for the most minutes without conceding in Ligue 1. Enyeama went 1,062 minutes without conceding, a feat that underlined his elite reflexes and command of the box.

Across 143 appearances in the Ligue 1, Enyeama built a reputation as one of the league’s most consistent shot-stoppers. His legacy as a reliable and respected goalkeeper ranks him high among Nigerian exports to France.

2. Victor Ikpeba

Nicknamed “The Prince of Monaco”, Victor Ikpeba earned his spot among Ligue 1’s best African players during his time at AS Monaco. He scored 55 goals in 170 Ligue 1 appearances for the club, helping them win the league title in 1996–97 under Jean Tigana.

Ikpeba’s best season came in 1997 when he netted 16 goals in Ligue 1, earning the African Footballer of the Year award from CAF. He also played a major role in Monaco’s run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in the late ’90s.

Ikpeba’s consistency, finishing, and status as a team leader at Monaco mark him out as a trailblazer for future Nigerian attackers in Europe.

1. Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen only played one season in Ligue 1, but it was a campaign packed with impact. The Nigerian striker joined Lille in 2019 and instantly exploded with 13 Ligue 1 goals and 5 assists in 27 appearances.

His debut goal against Nantes set the tone, and he consistently delivered clutch performances that kept Lille in the top half. He was named Lille’s Player of the Season and also won the Marc-Vivien Foé Award as the best African player in Ligue 1.

Beyond the stats, Osimhen’s rise in Lille convinced Napoli to splash €70 million to sign him in 2020, a record-breaking transfer fee at the time. His unforgettable season, influence on Lille’s attack, and elevation to superstardom make him the most impactful Nigerian in Ligue 1 history.
