Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson has publicly backed Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr to win the prestigious 2024 Ballon d’Or, despite his Manchester City teammate Rodri being one of the top contenders, Soccernet.football reports.

After an excellent campaign with Real Madrid where he won the UEFA Champions League again, Vinicius is a big favourite for the prestigious award.

However, Premier League winner Rodri is expected to give Vinicius a run for the top prize after helping Spain lift the 2024 European Championship.

With the award ceremony fast approaching, Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson has voiced his preference for Vinicius, praising his compatriot’s performances last season.

Speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, Ederson stated: “I support Vinicius, he deserves it for everything he did last season. I don’t know how the vote is done. If it counts the season, the titles, the number of goals, the assists…”

While Ederson made it clear that either player would be a worthy winner, his personal choice is Vinicius, who delivered a standout season for Real Madrid.

“I support Vinicius, also for Rodri and whoever wins it, it will be a deserved award, but I think Vini deserves it for everything he did in the Champions League, for everything he did last season. But if Rodri wins, I will also be happy,” he added.

Vinicius, 24, enjoyed a phenomenal campaign, scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists across 39 matches, helping Real Madrid claim three trophies, including the Champions League.

Rodri, meanwhile, played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s Premier League and Club World Cup triumphs, as well as Spain’s success in the European Championship.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on October 28 in Paris, with both Vinicius and Rodri expected to attend.
