The Super Eagles have suffered a massive defensive blow ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup qualification games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March, with key center-back Semi Ajayi set to miss out after suffering a hamstring injury, Footynaija.com reports.
Ajayi was forced off the pitch in the 41st minute of his last appearance during West Bromwich Albion’s 2-0 victory over Oxford United at The Hawthorns. The 31-year-old’s most recent setback comes as a big blow for both his club and country, as he is now set to be sidelined for several weeks.
After an assessment, West Brom announced on their official website that the Nigeria international will undergo a rehabilitation program, aiming to return before the end of the current campaign.
“Albion can confirm Semi Ajayi will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a hamstring injury,” the club announced.
“He will now enter a period of rehabilitation and will target a return before the season’s conclusion. Everyone at the club wishes Semi a speedy recovery.”
News of Ajayi’s injury comes as a major setback for the Super Eagles as the vastly experienced defender will now miss their all important World Cup qualifiers against Group C rivals Rwanda and Zimbabwe on March 19 and 22 respectively.
With Ajayi’s absence from the squad, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will have to find alternative solutions to add to the likes of William Troost-Ekong, Gabriel Osho and Calvin Bassey. Certainly, the former Arsenal man’s experience and leadership will be missed in that Super Eagles backline.
Chelle will be desperately hoping none of his other crucial stars develop any fitness concerns ahead of March’s fixtures as he looks to guide the Super Eagles past their imminent obstacles and ultimately secure 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.
