Samuel Chukwueze faces several months away from football after undergoing surgery in London for a serious hip injury sustained while playing for AC Milan, Footynaija reports.
The Italian club announced that the Nigerian international had an operation to repair a ruptured tendon in the tensor fasciae latae muscle of his left hip. Professor Ernest Schilders carried out the procedure, while Milan’s doctor, Stefano Mazzoni, was also present.
Chukwueze picked up the injury during Milan’s Serie A clash with Atalanta on October 18. The club initially explored non-surgical treatment, including injections, but eventually decided that an operation offered the best option.
Although Milan have not announced a recovery date, reports in Gazzetta dello Sport and SkySports put his absence at between three and five months.
The 27-year-old is now expected to begin rehabilitation in Italy under the supervision of Milan’s medical staff.
His absence means Nigeria will have to face Tanzania without him in both legs of their November 2027 AFCON qualifying double-header. A lengthy recovery could also rule him out of the March meetings with Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
At AC Milan, Chukwueze could miss between 18 and 25 matches, depending on his progress. That would include several Serie A fixtures, Europa League games and Coppa Italia commitments.
Among the notable matches he could miss are the derby against Inter and league encounters with Juventus, Napoli and Atalanta.
An early recovery could bring him back in January or February 2027. However, if he spends the full five months recovering, he may not return until March or April, leaving both Milan and Nigeria without his services for a substantial part of the season.
