Calvin Bassey will face Liverpool again this weekend with a record that shows how difficult Fulham’s Premier League trip to Anfield could be, Footynaija reports.
The Nigeria international has played against Liverpool six times in his career, winning only once and losing the other five matches.
That record will add to the challenge for Bassey, who has also taken on more responsibility at Fulham this season. The defender has been the club’s matchday captain in all three Premier League games, with regular captain Tom Cairney still recovering from a knee injury.
Fulham are also searching for their first points of the season under new manager Álvaro Arbeloa. They are one of only two teams yet to earn a point, alongside newly promoted Coventry City.
However, all three of Fulham’s defeats have been close. Chelsea and Crystal Palace both won 3-2, while Sunderland recorded a 1-0 victory.
Bassey knows Fulham will have to improve if they are to end that run against a Liverpool side with plenty of attacking quality.
“It’s not going to be easy. You know what’s coming when you play Liverpool; they have top players. It’s just about doing our homework and seeing how we can hurt them,” Bassey told Fulham’s official webpage.
The 26-year-old said Fulham’s players have also been working with Arbeloa to understand what needs to change.
“We talk with the manager about everything that might not have worked, and try and go into every game understanding more what he wants from us individually as players.
“He’ll set us up in the right way to tackle Liverpool.”
Bassey’s leadership will be important as Fulham try to avoid a fourth straight league defeat.
His personal record against Liverpool, however, makes the task even harder. After five defeats in his previous six meetings with the Reds, he will hope to produce a different result when Fulham visit Anfield.
