Lawani then stepped up when his team needed him most. The Nigerian goalkeeper denied two Ivorian penalties, while the Flying Eagles held their nerve from the spot to complete a memorable comeback and book their place in Sunday’s final.
Nigeria’s campaign looked in danger after a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in the group stage, but the young squad has bounced back impressively at the most important stage of the competition.
The Flying Eagles are now just one victory away from qualifying for the 2027 U-20 AFCON in Ghana. Because Ghana will host the tournament, WAFU B has only one qualification place available, meaning Nigeria must win Sunday’s final against either Niger or Burkina Faso to secure a place at the continental championship.
