Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has explained her absence from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, saying she is still recovering from injury and is not ready to return to competitive action, Footynaija.com reports.
Plumptre was one of the biggest names missing when head coach Justine Madugu named his squad for the tournament in Morocco, where the Super Falcons will be aiming to win a record-extending 11th continental title.
The defender, who has become a key figure for Nigeria since making her debut in 2022, broke her silence shortly after the squad was announced.

“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening.
“Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again.”
Rather than dwell on her disappointment, the Al Ittihad defender urged Nigerians to throw their full support behind the team throughout the tournament.
“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you. I am with you ladies.
“Naija no dey carry last.”
Plumptre’s absence leaves Nigeria without one of their most experienced defenders, having played an important role in the Super Falcons’ recent success with her versatility and leadership at the back.
Her message also puts to rest any speculation surrounding her omission. While she will not be part of Nigeria’s title defence in Morocco, Plumptre remains optimistic about returning to the Super Falcons once she is fully fit.
For now, however, her focus is on recovery, while her message to Nigerians is simple: stand behind the Super Falcons as they chase another WAFCON crown.
