Getafe are facing a difficult decision over Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche, whose future could have a huge impact on the club’s finances, Footynaija reports.
The 23-year-old impressed in La Liga last season and is attracting interest from Real Betis, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, Everton and Brentford. Real Betis are reportedly preparing a €15 million bid, while Real Sociedad are exploring a loan deal with an option to buy. Everton and Brentford also believe the Nigerian has the qualities to succeed in the Premier League.
Despite the transfer rumours, Getafe manager José Bordalás has made it clear that he wants Uche to remain with the team.
He said as per MD, “Regarding Uche, I don’t like to single anyone out because it often gets personalized, and there are feelings and family involved, and he’s a very important player, just like the rest of his teammates.
“Right now, he’s a Getafe player. With the same enthusiasm as his teammates, I’m sure he’ll join us with all the excitement in the world, and at this moment he’s a Getafe player and we’re obviously counting on him.”
Keeping Uche would strengthen Getafe ahead of their return to European football after finishing seventh in La Liga and qualifying for the UEFA Conference League. However, it would also leave the club with a serious financial challenge. After Crystal Palace decided against signing him permanently and La Liga reduced Getafe’s salary limit from €51.9 million to €34.8 million, the club now needs to cover an estimated €17 million gap.
If Uche stays, Getafe may have to sell high-earning players like Borja Mayoral or goalkeeper David Soria to reduce wages. Strict La Liga financial rules also mean the club cannot freely spend money from player sales. Instead, sporting director Toni Muñoz may have to rely on free transfers, loan signings and academy talents while hoping a successful Conference League campaign brings extra income.
