Former Aston Villa striker Frank McAvennie has revealed a rumour that Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho may have already agreed to stay at Celtic, Footynaija reports.
Iheanacho is currently without a club after his one-year contract with the Scottish champions expired at the end of June. Celtic decided not to activate the extension clause in his deal, making the 29-year-old a free agent. Even so, the Nigerian striker is believed to be keen on staying at Parkhead after enjoying a strong first season.
The former Leicester City forward scored nine goals in 24 matches in all competitions and played an important role as Celtic won both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup. He was especially impressive towards the end of the campaign, scoring six times in his final nine games.
Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank podcast, McAvennie said he heard while visiting Ireland that Iheanacho had already signed a new contract with Celtic.
“There was a rumour going about in Ireland that Iheanacho has signed. He’s got another year. I’m delighted. What a game-changer he is.”
The former striker explained that he was only repeating what he had heard and did not say the information had been confirmed. So far, neither Celtic nor Iheanacho’s representatives have announced a new agreement.
While the uncertainty continues, several clubs are reportedly monitoring the Nigerian. Turkish sides Bursaspor, Beşiktaş and Samsunspor have all been linked with him, while Brazilian club Vasco da Gama are also said to have made an offer. However, reports suggest Iheanacho’s priority is to remain in European football if he leaves Celtic.
