Nigeria coach Eric Chelle has received a timely boost ahead of Wednesday’s international friendly against Poland after FC Basel attacker Philip Otele linked up with the Super Eagles squad in Warsaw, Footynaija reports.
The 27-year-old’s arrival increases the number of players in camp to 21 as preparations gather pace for the meeting with Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium. With several regular stars unavailable, Otele’s presence offers Chelle another attacking option as he continues to evaluate his squad ahead of future competitive fixtures.
Otele comes into camp with confidence after playing a role in Nigeria’s successful Unity Cup campaign in London. The winger featured during the tournament and contributed an assist in the Super Eagles‘ commanding 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the final at The Valley, helping the team retain the trophy.
His arrival is particularly significant because Nigeria will tackle both Poland and Portugal without two of their most influential forwards. Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen have been left out of the squad following demanding club seasons, forcing Chelle to look elsewhere for attacking inspiration.
That situation could open the door for Otele to claim a more prominent role. Known for his pace, direct running and ability to create chances from wide areas, the former CFR Cluj star now has another opportunity to convince the coaching staff that he deserves a regular place in the national team setup.
Nigeria claimed a 1-0 victory over Poland back in 2018 in the only previous meeting between the two nations.
