Emmanuel Fernandez’s performances during his first two outings for the Super Eagles showed promising signs of great things to come in the future, Footynaija.com reports.
The Rangers star earned his first involvement with the Nigeria national team after establishing himself as one of the most reliable central defenders in the Scottish Premiership over the last few months and after two games, many Super Eagles fans will be counting down the days until they can watch him play in Nigeria’s famous colours again.
His first appearance came as a half-time substitute against Iran after head coach Eric Chelle introduced him in place of Semi Ajayi. In that game, he wasted little time in settling in nicely beside Igoh Ogbu and later on, fellow debutant Chibuike Nwaiwu as the Super Eagles saw out a 2-1 victory in Antalya.

Fernandez’s assured performance earned him a full debut against Jordan in the next game and the former Peterborough United man once again stood out with his display at the back. To cap things off, he bagged his maiden international goal with a well-struck effort to put Nigeria 2-1 up in the 41st minute.
Assessing Fernandez’s contributions over the two games, Nigerian coach Fatai Amoo, who previously managed Ibadan based NPFL outfit Shooting Stars, had lofty words of praise for the defender.

“I am impressed with the new boy, Fernandez,” Amoo told Complete Sports. “Scoring in his second appearance for the Super Eagles simply shows the hunger and determination in him.
“He has proven his worth with the team, and I know he will be a big asset for the Super Eagles. His composure and aerial prowess make me feel Fernandez has come to stay with this team.”
With both games slated for the March international break already played, Fernandez will now return to Scotland where he’ll be looking to continue playing an important role for Rangers as they look to keep up their winning momentum following consecutive Premiership wins over St. Mirren and Aberdeen.
