Emmanuel Fernandez scored on his first full start for the Super Eagles and celebrated the moment the way most footballers do in 2026, with a post that said everything that needed to be said, Footynaija.com reports.
The Rangers centre-back had come off the bench in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Iran on March 27, replacing Semi Ajayi at half-time for his maiden cap. Chelle handed him his first start four days later against Jordan, partnering him with Igoh Ogbu at centre-back.
The 24-year-old responded with a goal in the 41st minute. Osayi-Samuel delivered the cross, Fernandez controlled it and shifted onto his left before firing a clinical finish into the net to put Nigeria 2-1 ahead at the break.

The match ended 2-2, with Jordan equalising in the 77th minute. Alex Iwobi’s red card for violent conduct late on added a sour note to what had otherwise been an encouraging window for Chelle’s side.
Fernandez was born in London to Nigerian parents and was eligible for England, but committed to the Super Eagles without hesitation. A former midfielder who converted to centre-back, his ability to find space in the box and finish with either foot sets him apart from a typical defender.
Nigerian fans have taken notice.
On Instagram, he posted a team photo from the Jordan match and captioned it with, “Honoured And Grateful To Play For Nigeria… First Start, First Goal. Enjoyable Experience.”
He had told the NFF’s media team before the window that he was shocked when the call first came. By Tuesday night in Antalya, nobody was shocked anymore.
