Victor Boniface could yet play a part in Werder Bremen’s season run-in, with reports in Germany suggesting the striker is edging closer to a return from injury before the campaign ends, Footynaija reports.
The Nigeria international, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen to Werder Bremen, has not featured since early December after suffering a knee problem. His last appearance came in a narrow defeat away to Hamburg, where he managed only a brief outing before being forced off.
Since then, Boniface has missed a significant stretch of Bundesliga fixtures following surgery, leaving Bremen short of attacking depth during a crucial part of the season. However, there are now encouraging signs that his recovery is progressing.
German outlet Bild reports that the forward is due back in Bremen to resume work on the training pitch, starting with individual sessions. The plan is for him to gradually step up his workload and rejoin full team training in the coming weeks, provided there are no setbacks.
A return to competitive action is being targeted before the end of April, which would hand Bremen a timely boost as they push to finish the season strongly. Boniface’s physical presence and ability to link play were missed during his absence, particularly as the club has had to cope with further injury problems in attack.
Manager Daniel Thioune has seen his options reduced, with other forwards sidelined for extended periods. Boniface’s comeback, even if limited in minutes, could offer a different dimension to Bremen’s forward line at a decisive stage.
Before his injury setback, the 25-year-old made 11 appearances for Bremen, contributing two assists. While those numbers are modest, his overall impact was seen as promising, and the club will hope he can quickly regain sharpness if he returns as planned.
