Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed delight with Ademola Lookman after the Super Eagles forward’s impact in Los Colchoneros’ 5-0 rout of Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals on Thursday night, Footynaija.com reports.
Lookman, who arrived at the Spanish capital from Atalanta on deadline day of the winter transfer window, went straight into the thick of things at his new club with Simeone naming the Nigeria international in his starting XI for the high stakes clash at Betis’ Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla.
The 28-year-old wasted no time justifying his manager’s faith, delivering a goal, his 100th strike in his senior career, and an assist to inspire Atletico’s dominant display and book their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
Speaking after the match, Simeone singled out Lookman for special praise, highlighting the unique qualities he brings to the squad and how his profile can elevate the team’s overall quality.

“His characteristics speak for themselves; he’s different from the players we have,” he told reporters according to quotes on Goal.com.
“He’s more of a one-on-one player than a team player, although he has that aspect, but he allows us to play in several positions. He had a great impact.”
“He’s a big guy, he’s 28 years old. He came to help us and hopefully we’ll help him so he can continue to grow. He has different qualities than the players we have and that will make us better.”
There will be little time for celebration, however, as Lookman and his new teammates return to action against the same opposition in La Liga on Sunday. Atletico Madrid currently sit third in the Spanish top flight, ten points adrift of league leaders Barcelona.
