Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has provided a fitness update on Super Eagles defender Felix Agu, confirming the left-back is closing in on a competitive return after recovering from a serious syndesmosis injury, Footynaija.com reports.
Agu suffered the setback during a 1-0 Bundesliga victory over FC St. Pauli in early October 2025, with the injury ruling him out of contention for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco where Nigeria went on to claim bronze.
He recently made his first matchday squad appearance in four months during Werder’s clash with Borussia Monchengladbach but was not deemed ready to make his comeback at the time. However, that situation is now set to change, with the 26-year-old expected to be reintegrated into action gradually.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga encounter against SC Freiburg, Thioune, who only just recently took charge of Bremen following the departure of Steffen Horst, stressed the need for caution in managing Agu’s return to full fitness.
“It was a difficult and lengthy injury. With Felix, we have to be careful to ease him back into playing football,” he said, per Liga Insider.
While Thioune believes Agu can play an important role for the club, he remained noncommittal on whether the Super Eagles defender would be ready to start the Freiburg clash.
“I don’t know that after 48 hours. A final decision would be taken following further consultations with the club’s medical staff. We need to consider the specifics.”
The pre-existing relationship between Thioune and Agu, forged during their time together at Osnabruck, could benefit the Super Eagles defender in the long term. For now, Werder Bremen will continue to weigh their options carefully, with Agu’s playing time expected to be managed cautiously as he works his way back to full match fitness.
