Algeria’s build-up to their AFCON 2025 quarter-final showdown with Nigeria has been clouded by uncertainty surrounding Ismaël Bennacer, after the midfielder picked up an injury during the Round of 16 win over DR Congo, Footynaija.com reports.
The former Arsenal man was forced off early in the second half after pulling up with visible discomfort, leading to concern on the Algerian bench.
Bennacer attempted to continue briefly but could not shake off the problem and was eventually replaced by Himad Abdelli, as the Desert Foxes edged through to the last 8 courtesy of a late extra-time goal.

Reports have confirmed that the 28-year-old missed the following training session and is now awaiting the outcome of further medical examinations after sustaining a hamstring issue.
The injury has placed a question mark over his availability for the quarter-final clash against the Super Eagles, one of the standout fixtures of the tournament.
Ismaël Bennacer has been a steady figure in Algeria’s midfield at AFCON 2025, starting consistently and bringing control in possession. Operating from a deeper role, he’s handled the job of dictating play, keeping the ball moving, and shielding the back line.
His international experience has also shown, especially in tense moments where Algeria needed composure and clear-headed decisions in central areas.
Under coach Vladimir Petković, Algeria have placed strong emphasis on structure and control in midfield, a setup that hinges on Bennacer’s influence. His composure under pressure and distribution have helped unlock space further upfield, giving players like Riyad Mahrez and Mohamed Amoura more freedom to operate in advanced areas.
