In a tightly contested match, Peru and Chile played to a 0-0 draw in their Copa America Group A opener in Arlington, Texas.

Here are five key takeaways from the encounter:

1. Claudio Bravo’s Historic Night

Claudio Bravo’s performance was a standout in an otherwise lackluster match.

The 41-year-old goalkeeper became the oldest player to ever compete in the Copa America, and he marked the occasion with a series of crucial saves. His acrobatics in the 43rd minute to deny Miguel Araujo’s header, and a late double save to thwart Gianluca Lapadula and Paolo Guerrero, showcased his enduring quality and reflexes.

Bravo’s heroics ensured Chile left with a point, reinforcing his status as a vital component of this Chilean side.

2. Missed Opportunities for Alexis Sánchez

Alexis Sánchez will rue his missed opportunities, particularly the golden chance in the 16th minute. Positioned perfectly in the six-yard box, Sánchez received a low cross from Víctor Dávila but managed to send his shot over the bar.

For Chile to advance in the tournament, Sánchez must rediscover his clinical edge.

3. Injury Concerns for Both Teams

The match was marred by injuries, disrupting the flow and rhythm for both sides.

Peru’s Luis Advíncula was forced off in the 35th minute, while Chilean midfielder Diego Valdés was substituted at halftime. These injuries will be a concern for both managers as they look to adjust their strategies and maintain squad depth moving forward.

The physical nature of the game emphasized the intense competition of Copa America, where every knock and tackle can have significant repercussions.

4. Peru’s Attacking Intent in the Second Half

Peru showed more attacking intent in the second half, with Gianluca Lapadula at the heart of their forward play.

Despite creating several promising opportunities, Lapadula and his teammates were unable to find the back of the net. His slip in the 57th minute and a missed volley in the 79th were indicative of Peru’s frustrations in front of goal.

Nonetheless, their aggressive approach after the break will give coach Jorge Fossati some positives to build on as they prepare for their next match against Canada.

5. Implications for Group A

With Argentina securing a 2-0 victory over Canada, the draw between Peru and Chile leaves Group A wide open.

Both teams are now tied with one point each, trailing Argentina by two. The result heightens the stakes for the upcoming fixtures, with Chile set to face the group leaders Argentina, and Peru taking on Canada.

Each team will be eager to secure their first win of the tournament to boost their chances of advancing to the knockout stages.
