Over the years, Lille OSC have not only built a strong reputation in France but also opened their doors to a select group of Nigerian talents who left lasting impressions. From solid hands in goal to electric firepower up front, these players brought pride to Nigerian football on the French stage.

In this article, Footynaija.com ranks the top 3 Nigerian footballers in Lille OSC’s history, based on their performances, impact, consistency, and overall legacy at the club.

3. Peter Odemwingie

Odemwingie arrived at Lille in the summer of 2004 from Belgian side La Louvière. At just 23 years old, he quickly became a fan favourite with his explosive pace, flair, and unpredictable finishing. In three seasons with Les Dogues, he made 75 league appearances and scored 23 goals.

The 2006–07 UEFA Champions League campaign became one of his most iconic contributions. Odemwingie scored in the historic 2-0 away win over AC Milan at San Siro, which sent Lille to the knockout rounds for the first time ever. That moment stood out not only as a milestone for Lille but also for Nigerian football on the European stage.

While he did not win silverware with Lille, his attacking output helped the club finish second in Ligue 1 in 2004–05, securing a Champions League spot. His consistency and ability to deliver in big matches made him one of the club’s most valuable players during his stay. He later sealed a high-profile move to Lokomotiv Moscow in 2007.

2. Victor Osimhen

When Osimhen joined Lille from Charleroi in August 2019, few predicted the instant impact he would have. At just 20, he stepped into the shoes of Nicolas Pépé and delivered immediately. In his first two games, he scored three goals, including a brace on his Ligue 1 debut against Nantes.

Osimhen ended the 2019–20 Ligue 1 season with 13 league goals in 27 matches, and 18 goals in all competitions, making him Lille’s top scorer across all fronts. His performances helped Lille secure a top-four finish before the season was cut short due to COVID-19.

He also scored in the UEFA Champions League, becoming one of the youngest Nigerians to find the net in Europe’s top competition. His incredible rise earned him the 2020 Marc-Vivien Foé Award for the best African player in Ligue 1, the first Nigerian to win it since Vincent Enyeama in 2014.

In July 2020, Napoli signed him for a reported €81.3 million, making him Lille’s record sale and one of the most expensive African players in history.

1. Vincent Enyeama

No Nigerian has worn the Lille shirt with more consistency and class than Vincent Enyeama. The former Super Eagles captain joined the French club in 2011, and after a loan spell with Maccabi Tel Aviv, he returned to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

His best season came in 2013–14, when he kept 11 consecutive clean sheets in Ligue 1 and went 1,062 minutes without conceding a goal. This was just 114 minutes shy of the all-time Ligue 1 record held by Gaëtan Huard. The feat, nonetheless, remains one of the best ever by any goalkeeper in the French top flight.

Across seven seasons at Lille, Enyeama made 143 Ligue 1 appearances, pulled off countless match-winning saves, and became one of the most respected figures in the dressing room. In 2014, he finished third in the voting for the Marc-Vivien Foé Award, further proving his quality between the sticks.

Though he never lifted a trophy with Lille, Enyeama gave the club stability, leadership, and experience. He also remains one of the very few African goalkeepers to command long-term respect in a top European league. To this day, fans remember him as one of the greatest African players ever to play for Lille.
